Thought Bubble Anthology 2015

Publisher: Image Comics

(W) Clark Burscough & Various (A) Boo Cook & Various (CA) Babs Tarr

A collection of new short stories by some of the best in the business, plus many more names to be announced. This anthology is part of the United Kingdom’s Thought Bubble Festival which takes place in Leeds, Northern England from November 2015. All profits from this comic go to Barnardo’s, one of the largest children’s charities in the UK.

As stated on their website, Thought Bubble is “the UK’s largest annual event which celebrates sequential art in all its forms, including everything from superheroes to independent and small press comics.” Concurrent to the festival, Thought Bubble releases a printed anthology featuring several artists from around the world. Last year’s installment was my first experience with the publication, having been drawn in by names on the cover like Emily Carroll and Ales Kot. This year, I’m looking forward to discovering more new artists as well as what some of my favorites (Tula Lotay, Jeff Lemire, and Farel Dalrymple) have in store.

8house #6: Mirror (Part 1 of 4)

Publisher: Image Comics

(W) Hwei Lim, Emma Ríos (A/CA) Hwei Lim

What is worthy of being human? EMMA RÍOS (PRETTY DEADLY, ISLAND) and HWEI LIM (LALAGE, HERO) team up to tell a new story within the 8HOUSE universe. MIRROR follows a terrorist talking dog, an idealist mage and a heroic lab rat on their quest for acceptance.

I’ve been pretty vocal about my love for 8house around these parts. So far, we’ve only seen one creative team (Graham and Churchland) and one subseries (Arclight) in this shared universe, and I’m excited to see how a new team will further define it. Also, after her excellent writing and artwork on the miniseries ID (published in issue one and two of Image’s new anthology Island), I will check out any new work from Emma Ríos.

James Bond #1

Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment

(W) Warren Ellis (A) Jason Masters (CA) Dom Reardon

Beginning “VARGR”, the first story in the ongoing James Bond comic series by best-selling writer Warren Ellis! James Bond returns to London after a mission of vengeance in Helsinki, to take up the workload of a fallen 00 Section agent. But something evil is moving through the back streets of the city, and sinister plans are being laid for Bond in Berlin…

In Stores November 4th in advance of the block buster movie on November 6th! Dynamite Entertainment is proud to launch the first James Bond comic book series in 20 years! “Ian Fleming’s James Bond is an icon, and it’s a delight to tell visual narratives with the original, brutal, damaged Bond of the books.” – Warren Ellis

Typically, a new James Bond comic isn’t something that would get me immediately fired up. This one is written by Warren Ellis. Congratulations, Dynamite. I’m on board.

Klaus #1

Publisher: Boom Comics

(W) Grant Morrison (A/CA) Dan Mora

Set in a dark fantastic past of myth and magic, Klaus tells the story of how Santa Claus really came to be. Where did he begin? What was he like when he was young? Why does he do what he does? How does he do what he does? And what happens when he faces his greatest challenge? Drawing on Santa Claus’ wilder roots in Viking lore and Siberian shamanism-taking in the creepier side of Christmas, and characters like the sinister Krampus-Klaus is a “Santa Claus: Year One.”

Hey. Grant Morrison is writing a dark, Norse-like Santa Claus origin story. Does that sound crazy? Definitely. Am I going to read it? Absolutely. Other writers might have been tempted to take this in the direction of a silly Christmastime romp, but with a mind like Morrison’s, this serious take on Santa might turn out to be something really special.

Paper Girls #1

Publisher: Image Comics

(W) Brian K. Vaughan (A/CA) Cliff Chiang

SAGA writer BRIAN K. VAUGHAN launches a brand-new ONGOING SERIES with superstar Wonder Woman artist CLIFF CHIANG! In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Stand By Me meets War of the Worlds in this mysterious young adult adventure, starting with a spectacular DOUBLE-SIZED FIRST ISSUE for the regular price of just $2.99!

As I mentioned in a previous blog post regarding the new series We Stand On Guard, I have enough faith in Brian K. Vaughan to try out any book he’s involved with. Cliff Chiang’s art in the preview pages looks great, and I love the premise/setting for this one (and the comparison to Stand By Me in the solicitation makes me think of Jeff Lemire’s upcoming Plutona that was featured in my last Previews picks). If that weren’t enough, I’m also a sucker for Halloween stuff, particularly movie and TV specials from my childhood. Given the time period, I think this book will fit right into that.

Black Magick #1

Publisher: Image Comics

(W) Greg Rucka (A/CA) Nicola Scott

The hammer falls this Halloween! From New York Times bestselling and Eisner Award-winning writer GREG RUCKA (LAZARUS, Stumptown, Gotham Central) and superstar artist NICOLA SCOTT (Birds of Prey, Secret Six, Earth 2)! Detective Rowan Black works robbery/homicide for the Portsmouth PD, but her greatest mystery is the  truth about herself…both who she has been, and who she will become. Yet there are others in Rowan’s world with very long memories, and the power that one person holds, another will always covet. PLUS, each issue also features an all-new work of original fiction by GREG RUCKA! A new gothic-noir ongoing series about legacy,  destiny, redemption…and the price of magic.

I think that the first season of True Detective may be responsible for kindling my love for these paranormal crime stories. I’ve been enjoying books along those lines like Image’s newly released Wolf, and DC’s Gotham by Midnight. By the looks of the preview pages, Black Magick seems like a welcome addition to the genre. Having Greg Rucka on board is a bonus, as his work on Gotham Central shows that he knows his way around detective stories.

Karnak #1

Publisher: Marvel Comics

(W) Warren Ellis (A) Gerardo Zaffino (CA) David Aja

THE FLAW IN ALL THINGS
“My curse is that I see the flaw in all things. Systems. Philosophies. Structures. People. Everything. Never forget who I am. I am Karnak of the Inhumans.” You may not know who Karnak is now, but you will when Warren Ellis (MOON KNIGHT, Planetary) and Gerardo Zaffino are done with you. Phil Coulson goes to Karnak to help with a SHIELD case with Inhuman implications and what he’s going to find will terrify you.

It’s Warren Ellis. That’s enough for me. Regardless of having a stellar writer attached to this book, it seems like an interesting departure from Marvel’s typical fare, and it’s always nice to see either one of the Big Two taking chances. Just like the solicit implied, I don’t know much about Karnak (though I admit to hitting up Wikipedia as soon as I saw the announcement), but I’m really looking forward to seeing where this one goes.

Survivor’s Club #1

Publisher: DC Comics

(W) Lauren Beukes, David Halvorson (A) Ryan Kelly (CA) Bill Sienkiewicz

One was possessed by a poltergeist. Another was trapped in a haunted house. A third had a killer doll. Ever wonder what happened to these children of the 1980s? Find out in SURVIVORS CLUB, a new series cowritten by renowned horror novelist Lauren Beukes and videogame journalist Dave Halverson, with art by Ryan Kelly (NORTHLANDERS).
Having found each other over the internet, six grown-up survivors are drawn together by the horrors they experienced in 1987 when a rash of occult events occurred around the world-with fatal results. Now, there are indications that it may be happening all over again. Is it possible that these six aren’t just survivors-but were chosen for their fates?

Most of the books in this issue of Previews are slated to come out in October and that means that I’ve got to have at least one straight-up horror book. Although the solicitation for Suvivor’s Club evokes some vibes reminiscent of Cabin in the Woods, I’m hoping for something that’s a bit less silly than that. I don’t really know what to expect with this one, but it’s got me interested enough to give it a shot.

On Your Radar: 7/21/2015

Hey, there! Thanks for checking out the first installment of our new series On Your Radar, a write-up of new comic series we’ve enjoyed that you may have missed.

8house #1 Arclight

Publisher: Image Comics

(W) Brandon Graham (A/CA) Marian Churchland A lady of the blood house has had her mind trapped in a strange alien root-body. She’s hiding on the outskirts of her kingdom until she learns that the alien monster pretending to be her has returned. The first issue of a shared fantasy universe. Sharp genderqueer knights, blood magic, music, dancing, and a goose.
It’s no secret that I’m a huge Brandon Graham fan. His take on the Prophet series has been some of the best science fiction I have ever read and the tonal similarities in 8house: Arclight are felt right from page one, all while creating an entirely new fantasy universe. The setting is a large part of what makes 8house so special in that it will be a shared fantasy universe that will be shaped by several different comics creators telling stories for several different characters. Each issue of 8house is subtitled with the character name it will follow. Issues one and two feature Graham and Churchland’s Arclight character, while the solicitations for issues three through five follow two new characters (Kiem and Yorris), led by different creative teams doing their own story arcs.

This shared universe is an ambitious one and I am all on board. Churchland has done a beautiful job on the first issue and the bits of lore she and her husband Graham sprinkle in create an intriguing world begging to be explored.

We Stand on Guard #1
Publisher: Image Comics

(W) Brian K. Vaughan (A/CA) Steve Skroce
SAGA writer BRIAN K. VAUGHAN teams with artistic legend and MATRIX storyboard artist STEVE SKROCE for an action-packed military thriller that will have everyone talking. 100 years from now, a heroic band of Canadian civilians must defend their homeland from invasion…by the United States of America! The hyper-detailed combat between badass freedom fighters and giant f***ing robots begins with a spectacular 40-PAGE FIRST ISSUE for the regular price of just $2.99!
With a writer like Brian K. Vaughan, this one may have been a bit harder to miss. Vaughan’s brilliant work on books like Saga and Y: The Last Man have earned him an immediate purchase for me. I’ll admit, I had some reservations about the book after reading the solicitation. It felt almost a little too silly and over the top. I’m glad I was wrong. The first issue of We Stand on Guard is solid. Vaughan and Skroce have created a very interesting near-future that’s fantastic while remaining grounded in reality. I can’t wait for the next issue. Also, giant robots.STK670270
 Providence #1 (of 12)
Publisher: Avatar Press Inc.

(W) Alan Moore (A/CA) Jacen Burrows
You may have noticed that I’ve omitted the solicitation here. That’s because it’s long. Very long (though you can read it here). In fact, the solicitation initially made me unsure of whether I wanted to try the book — opening with the line “The most important work of 2015 begins here” and later ” this is a sequential masterpiece that will serve as important a call to the next generation of comic book writers as Watchmen did 30 years ago:  this is a definitive demonstration of just how good a comic book can be.” However, what little I knew about the actual story intrigued me; taking place in 1919, Providence is a deconstruction piece on the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Being a fan of Lovecraft and a sucker for a good horror comic, I decided to check out the book, and I’m really glad I did. The book follows a journalist investigating a claim of a book that drives its readers insane. Providence is a slow burn, but in its first two issues has managed to create that cosmic horror feeling of something sinister going on behind the scenes. The first issue even had a moment near the end (no spoilers) that made me go back and reread several sections. I am really enjoying the book and am looking forward to seeing where it goes.STK671621
Material #1
Publisher: Image Comics

(W) Ales Kot (A) Will Tempest (CA) Tom Muller

A man comes home from Guantanamo Bay, irrevocably changed.
An actress receives an offer that can revive her career.
A boy survives a riot and becomes embedded within a revolutionary movement.
A philosopher is contacted by a being that dismantles his beliefs. Look around you.
Everything is material.
Ales Kot is weird. The kind of weird that I like. His series Zero has been one of my favorites in the past year or so, and he’s a writer I’ve been keeping my eye on. Material tackles prominent social issues including racism, illegal detention, torture, and police brutality. It’s a great example of how comic books don’t have to be capes, cowls, and stories of the fantastic. Comics are a medium of art just as capable as any other to tackle the problems of our world today.Archie1-FionaStaplesRegCover
Archie #1
Publisher: Archie Comics Publications

(W) Mark Waid (A) Fiona Staples

Comic superstars Mark Waid and Fiona Staples reimagine an icon! Change is coming to Riverdale in this can’t-miss kick-off to Archie’s new ongoing series! Familiar faces return in new and unexpected ways in this must-have #1 issue! As the new school year approaches, you’d think Archie Andrews would be looking forward to classes and fun – but nothing is as it seems in the little town of Riverdale. But is this a one-off or a sign of bigger changes awaiting for America’s favorite teens – and the entire town? Find out in this exciting and remarkable first issue!
Full disclosure, this is the first Archie comic book I’ve ever read. I know some names. There’s Archie, Betty, Veronica, and the guy who likes hamburgers is Jughead, right? I’ve never had much of an interest in the classic character, but Archie Comic Publications has been making some interesting changes in their lineup and it seems to be culminating in this relaunch. The creative team of Mark Waid and Fiona Staples is 100% the reason why I decided to check this book out. What does Archie look like in 2015? It looks like fun. With the team attached to this book right now, I can’t say that I’m surprised I enjoyed it. Taking the classic feel of Archie and the gang into the modern area invoked a feeling of nostalgia that was somewhere in between American Graffiti and a John Hughes film. If you’ve never read an Archie comic, now is a great time to jump on.STK677323
Island #1

Publisher: Image Comics
(W/A) Brandon Graham & Various (CA) Brandon Graham

PRETTY DEADLY artist EMMA RIOS and KING CITY, PROPHET, and MULTIPLE WARHEADS writer/artist BRANDON GRAHAM bring you a new ONGOING COMICS MAGAZINE. Each issue holds three issue-length chapters of new work from various creators around the globe. PRINTED OVERSIZED WITH NO ADS!
Island is a new comics anthology curated by Emma Rios and Brandon Graham (yep, he makes the list twice). The aim of the anthology is to showcase creators from around the world and give them the freedom to make whatever they want. Each issue will feature one story that continues from the previous one (for the first issue, we get a new installment of Graham’s Multiple Warheads), while also introducing a new series that will continue on in the next issue. Island #1 features comics by Emma Rios, Brandon Graham, and Ludroe as well as art by Marian Churchland and an essay by Kelly Sue DeConnick. I love what Rios and Graham are going for in this ongoing anthology and I really enjoyed everything in this first issue. I’m really looking to discovering creators I may have never heard of.

July 2015 Previews: Carman’s Picks

Plutona #1

Plutona #1

Publisher: Image Comics

(W) Jeff Lemire (A/CA) Emi Lenox

A brand-new heartfelt super-hero series by JEFF LEMIRE (DESCENDER, Hawkeye) and amazing newcomer EMI LENOX!

This is definitely an easy one for me. Jeff Lemire is one of my favorite writers, and the art in the previews looks really cool. Also, with a premise that seems to be a superhero twist on the coming-of-age tale Stand By Me, I am definitely in for this one.

From Under Mountains #1

From Under Mountains #1

Publisher: Image Comics

(W) Claire Gibson, Marian Churchland (A) Sloane Leong (CA) Marian Churchland

In the first issue of this new fantasy series, old feuds and new monsters rise up to haunt the isolated northern fortress of Karsgate.

The solicitation for this book doesn’t give us much to go on, but it doesn’t mean I’m any less excited. The recent release of 8house #1: Arclight was the best debut issue I’ve read in a long time, and Marian Churchland’s art was wonderful in it. She’s not doing the art in this issue of From Under Mountains, but just having her on the team and the possibility of being tied into the shared 8house universe makes it an instant add to my pull list.

Jughead #1

Jughead #1

Publisher: Archie Comic Publications

(W) Chip Zdarsky (A/CA) Erica Henderson

In the grand tradition of comic book reboots like Archie #1, Archie Comics proudly presents Jughead #1 from the comics dream team of Chip Zdarsky (Howard the Duck) and Erica Henderson (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl)! Riverdale High provides a quality education and quality hot lunches, but when one of those is tampered with, Jughead Jones swears vengeance! Well, we mean, he doesn’t “swear.” This is still Archie Comics after all.

There have been a lot of interesting changes going on with Archie titles in the past year or so. Rebooting the main Archie title with Mark Waid and Fiona Staples is definitely the biggest news to come from all of that, but the newly announced Jughead book is another attention-grabber. I never thought I’d be reading a Jughead book, but with Chip Zdarsky writing this one, I will certainly be checking it out. After really enjoying what Staples and Waid have done in the new Archie #1, I’m looking forward to see where they go with these classic characters.

Mirrors Edge Exordium #1

Mirror’s Edge: Exordium #1

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

(W) Christofer Emgard (A) Mattias Haggstrom, Robert Sammelin (CA) Robert Sammelin

Leading up to the events of the highly anticipated new Mirror’s Edge game comes an exhilarating comic prequel that delves into the story of Faith, one of the most celebrated heroines in video games! Dare to enter the fast-paced, high-stakes world of life on the mirror’s edge!

I don’t know a whole lot about this title other than what’s in the solicitation, but I am so ready for next year’s release of Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst (the follow-up to 2008’s cult favorite, parkour video game Mirror’s Edge). I’d love for them to flesh out the world shown so beautifully in the first game. Some might say I’m just riding the hype train for the new game, but what can I say? I bought these tickets seven years ago.

Art By Brad Walker

That’s right, Sinestro comes out this week. All hail the mighty yellow ring. Recently in the DCU we discovered that the Green Lantern Corps have mysteriously gone missing! Now that the Green Lanterns are M.I.A, who is there to stop Sinestro from bringing order to the universe? The universe is full of chaos, because villains have no one to fear now that Green Lanterns are gone. They will soon learn that the color they need to fear is not green, but yellow. ALL HAIL THE SINESTRO CORPS!

Robin Son of Batman #1
Written and Drawn By Patrick Gleason

This last year we have seen Damian find his role as the son of Batman, die at the hands of a clone of himself, be brought back to life with the power of a chaos stone, and receive and lose powers comparable to Superman. How can one kid, even the son of Bruce Wayne, handle all of this? In this new series we will see Damian struggle and hopefully deal with all these issues. Plus now he has a giant pet bat. Where did that come from? I can’t wait to pick up this first issue to find out all of this and more.

Thors #1
Written Jason Arron
Art By Chris Sprouse

Doom may be God in Battleworld, but his powers have some limitations. While he may have ultimate power, he lacks the ability to be everywhere at once. To aid him in keeping order, he has created a police force of Thors. That’s right Thors! As this cop drama unfolds we will be introduced to not only Thors that we know but new ones as well. Can you image being pulled over for a speeding ticket and Thor walks up to your car?

Jason Aaron has already proven his ability to write Thor by delivering two amazing Thor books and I look forward to reading what he has in store for this title.

Old Man Logan #2
Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Andrea Sorrentino

I don’t know what it is about Logan being an old man that has gotten me so excited. Maybe it’s because I never imagined him getting older due to his healing power, or maybe it’s the idea of seeing him outlive us all. Whatever the case may be, the first issue was amazing and I have high hopes for the second one.

At the end of the last issue we saw Logan climbing a border wall, willingly breaking the laws of Battleworld. What awaits him on the other side of the wall? Why is he daring to cross his region’s border? Hopefully we will find out the answers as Old Man Logan continues.
