Circadians: First Light

We were light years from our home, galaxies away, when we first discovered this ancient celestial body — a planet filled with intriguing, intelligent lifeforms, not too unlike our own. Some built kingdoms below the surface of the green seas, while others controlled the desert-filled plains and cliffs. Among them we found scientists, inventors, farmers, traders and fighters. While our presence has been unsettling for some, we have had very few incidents with the locals. Still, we Circadians, Earth’s famed explorers, must do what we can to ensure peace. We must respect this world and its hosts. The heads of Moontide passed down orders from above. We are to open negotiations with the three clans, in hopes of gaining their favor, along with our own security while on the planet. We must also collect organic samples for the depository on Moontide. This is new ground for all of us, but we must be brave and resourceful. The future of the Circadians depends on it.

The aim of Circadians: First Light is to lead a team of researchers on the planet of Ryh. Players need to manage their crew (dice) to visit various parts of the planet for trade, farming, construction and research. Players score points for negotiating with the locals, harvesting resources for the depository, upgrading their research base, exploring the planet, and collecting gems. The game is played over eight rounds. At the end of the final round, the player with the most points wins.

Halloween Comic Fest 2018 Is Here and So Are Matt’s Top Recommendations!

Halloween Comic Fest is happening here at Fanfare all-day on Saturday, October 26th! We will have free comics to give out throughout the day and if you wear your costume we will feature you on our social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)!

To help us get ready for the big event, Matt, Fanfare’s Cryptkeeper of Cool, is helping to count us down to the big day with movie and comic recomendations throughout the week! So without further ado, here’s Matt!

Immortal Hulk
(W) Al Ewing
(A) Joe Bennet & Various Artists

Well, I never thought I’d be recommending an Incredible Hulk comic for a horror list, but here we are. This comic has completely blown me away. Ewing and Bennett’s story offers a mixture of action and suspense that incorporates incredibly effective body horror along the way. The book’s creative team brings fresh new ideas and twists to the Hulk mythos, exploring the gamma powered characters of the Marvel U. and the monstrous versions of themselves that they transform into due to their irradiated origins.  The mysterious “Green Door” and its connection to the Hulk brings an almost Lovecraftian theme to the story and introduces a sense of dread to the book unlike any other Hulk story before. Do not sleep on this comic, it is one of the best reads I have had all year long.

The Fly (1986)
Director: David Cronenberg

My movie recomendation for the day is this 1986 remake of the amazing classic horror/sci-fi film The Fly.

In The Fly, a brilliant scientist named Seth Brundle creates a successful teleportation unit and decides it is time to see if it will teleport a human being. The guinea pig for this first test is none other than Seth himself. Things go a bit wrong when a fly enters the unit with him during teleportation and the fly’s DNA mixes with Brundle’s. Following this, Brundle’s body and mind starts to deteriorate until his humanity has eroded and left him a human fly monster.

The movie’s director, David Cronenberg (master of body horror), delivers one of the best movie remakes I have ever seen with some of the greatest practical horror effects ever put onto film. Not only that, but the film stars Jeff Goldblum, so you know that there is a high level of zaniness delivered in the performance as well.

October 2019 Previews: Carman’s Picks

Skulldigger #1 (of 6)

OCT190269

December 18, 2019

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

(W) Jeff Lemire (A/CA) Tonci Zonjic

Spiral City finds itself trapped in a vicious cycle of crime, corruption, and violence. With the heart of the city at stake, a vigilante rises in Skulldigger. However, when the nefarious Grimjim escapes from prison, will Skulldigger and his ward, Skeleton Boy, be enough to save Spiral City?

Although it’s sad that the initial “Farm” storyline of Black Hammer has come to an end (along with the recent Black Hammer/Justice League crossover), Jeff Lemire has assured fans that there is still plenty of stories in the Black Hammer universe to be told. Skulldigger looks to be the first book to kick that off. I haven’t missed any of these spinoffs yet and neither should you!

Wonder Woman: Dead Earth #1 (of 4)

OCT190490

December 18, 2019

Publisher: DC Comics

(W/A/CA) Daniel Warren Johnson

The celebrated creator of Murder Falcon and Extremity and artist of The Ghost Fleet, Daniel Warren Johnson brings bold sci-fi chops to his DC debut with a harrowing vision of Wonder Woman unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Princess Diana of Themyscira left paradise to save Man’s World from itself. When Wonder Woman awakens from a centuries-long sleep to discover the Earth reduced to a nuclear wasteland, she knows she failed. Trapped alone in a grim future, Diana must protect the last human city from titanic monsters while uncovering its secret of this dead Earth-and how she may be responsible for it.

Dang, who saw this coming? Daniel Warren Johnson writing and drawing a Wonder Woman story is one of those don’t-know-you-need-it-until-now kind of things. The solicit has mention of “titanic monsters” so fans of DWJ can expect him to be in his element.

Hellboy & the B.P.R.D.: The Seven Wives Club

OCT190340

December 11, 2019

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

(W) Mike Mignola (A/CA) Adam Hughes

The team behind the Eisner Award-winning one-shot Hellboy: Krampusnacht spins a new ghostly yarn! Hellboy comes to the aid of a young girl whose ghost hunt goes wrong, and a visit to an abandoned medical school reveals sinister layers to a grisly, long-ago murder. Stolen cadavers, vengeful spirits, and more abound in this one-shot.

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola reunites with fan-favorite artist Adam Hughes for a spirit-fueled scream fest sure to excite old and new fans alike!

Y’all, it’s Mike Mignola writing a Hellboy story. I don’t think I need to say anything beyond that (but I will — Adam Hughes did a great job on Krampusnacht and I can’t wait to see this team on another Hellboy one-off!).

Red Mother #1

OCT191378

December 11, 2019

Publisher: Boom! Studios

(W/CA) Jeremy Haun (A) Danny Luckert

* Jeremy Haun returns to his The Beauty roots as he teams with Danny Luckert, hot off Regression, for a new psychological horror series.
* After losing her eye and the man she loves in a brutal mugging, Daisy McDonough is left trying to put the pieces of her life back together. Just when she begins to think she can heal- move on, she begins to see strange things through her new prosthetic eye. And The Red Mother sees her in return.
* Continuing BOOM! Studios’ string of successes, The Red Mother follows Faithless, Once & Future, and Something is Killing the Children for a new original series that examines the dangers that hide in plain sight – and the consequences of digging beneath the surface to find the truth underneath.

I remember enjoying The Beauty #1 but that was a series I didn’t keep up with — it may be time to revisit that before this is released. Boom! Studios has been coming out with some really stellar debuts recently and Red Mother certainly has my attention.

Gates of Delirium

You have finally set out to find the truth. You’ve heard the rumors of ancient runes and the lost pages of a scattered tome that tell of ancient and evil monstrosities, calling for their return. You’ve heard tales of those who came before you in this search losing grip on their sanity as they grew nearer to the truth. As you press on, you can’t help but notice that you feel less attached to reality yourself. Some days you lose track of time and can’t account for hours of the day. The whispers of secret gates to another world are growing stronger, and while no one knows who is building them, you have a dreadful hunch…

Could you be the hidden architect of the Gates of Delirium?

In Gates of Delirium, players have a hand of split action cards: one side sane, and the other insane. Every round, one player decides whether the round is sane or insane, and all players must play that side of their cards. During sane rounds, players search for maps and lost pages to a secret tome, while assigning investigators to help them in their cause. During insane rounds, players collect ancient runes and work to build gates to release the monstrosities that their sane selves have been trying so hard to understand and prevent. Earn the most victory points by the time the last monstrosity is released to win Gates of Delirium.

Abomination: The Heir of Frankenstein

It’s been twenty years since Victor Frankenstein died on a ship in the arctic, but his vengeful creature lives on, as does Robert Walton, the sea captain who vowed to kill the fiend before mercy stayed his hand. It’s now 1819, and a sinister darkness descends upon the city of Paris. A mysterious benefactor of gigantic stature has emerged in the scientific community, never showing his face, claiming to possess the late Frankenstein’s research. He sponsors a grand competition, offering an even grander prize: unlocking the mystery of mortality!

Renowned scientists from around the world come to take part: some drawn to solve this eternal riddle, others coerced against their will. But a certain captain comes as well, one deeply suspicious of the secretive patron, hoping to finally fulfill his vow.

Abomination: The Heir of Frankenstein is a competitive game of strategic monster building for 2-4 players, inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic novel of gothic horror. In the game, the creature demands your help to accomplish what his own creator would not: to bring to life an abomination like itself, a companion to end its miserable solitude. Through worker placement and careful management of decomposing resources, you’ll gather materials from the cemeteries and morgues around the city, conduct valuable research at the Academy of Science, hire less-than-reputable associates, and toil away in your lab — all in an effort to assemble a new form of life and infuse it with a “spark of being”. Do well, and the creature may reward you during one of its surprise visits; do poorly, and you may come to regret not putting forth more effort. Narrative elements come into play throughout the game, guided by your decisions, leading to potentially unsavory outcomes.

The game ends when you succeed in bringing your creation to life or when the Captain kills the creature, whichever happens first. Then the player with the most points fulfills Frankenstein’s dark legacy, becoming his heir, for good or ill…

Cutthroat Caverns: Anniversary Edition

“Without teamwork, you will never survive. Without betrayal, you’ll never win.”

An artifact of untold power lies in your hands. To claim it, you must escape the caverns alive. No less than nine horrific beasts stand in your way — that, and the greed of the other players. In the kill-stealing game Cutthroat Caverns, you decide whether to swing for a whopping 50 points of damage or hold back, awaiting a more opportune time to strike. Only the final blow matters if you are to score the kill. Hold back or sabotage other’s plans too much, and the entire party will die without a winner. The adventurers jockey for position during combat with their lives and their own selfish desire for power in the balance, so things get very funny and very deadly very quickly.

Cutthroat Caverns: Anniversary Edition is a complete reboot of the well-known semi-co-operative game Cutthroat Caverns, with the game experience being updated in significant ways. Enhanced encounters, epic finish rules, scaling play times, enhanced components, updated cards, rules and keywords to streamline play and a ground up re-envisioning of the illustrations and graphics are all among the updates you can look forward to in this anniversary edition of the game.

Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG: Lankhmar Boxed Set

The boxed set officially licensed from the estate of Fritz Leiber!

Enter the thrilling world of Fritz Leiber’s Nehwon, home to the legendary city of Lankhmar and the infamous heroes Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser! Prepare yourself to battle members of the city’s nefarious Thieves’ Guild in fog- shrouded alleys, to barter for cursed curios in the Plaza of Dark Delights, and to seek the wisdom of Ningauble of the Seven Eyes and Sheelba of the Eyeless Face! All this and more is possible with DCC Lankhmar.

This boxed set contains comprehensive rules options and new material for the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG explicitly designed to capture the unique setting of Nehwon and Lankhmar, the City of the Black Toga. Inside, you’ll find new spells, monsters, magical items, patrons, and rules to make your DCC RPG campaign more like Leiber’s exiting stories—including the popular “Fleeting Luck” mechanic where good fortune blesses your characters one minute, only to dash their hopes the next.

This set also includes a detailed look at Lankhmar and provides the judge with an assortment of descriptions, tables, and adventure ideas to get their DCC Lankhmar campaign up and running with a minimum of effort, including the adventure No Small Crimes in Lankhmar and a beautiful city map illustrated by Doug Kovacs.

Decrypto: Laser Drive Expansion

When you add Decrypto: Expansion #01 – Laserdrive to the base game, each round you draw a category card — movie titles, tourist attractions, words that begin with an A, etc. — and at least one of the clues that you give to your teammates must match this category. If all three of your clues match the category, then you receive a red laser token.

You can spend two red laser tokens to attempt to guess one of the team’s hidden words. If you guess correctly, you receive a white token because you’ve intercepted their info — and collecting two white tokens wins you the game, so this expansion gives you a new way to work toward victory.

Hellboy Board Game: The Wild Hunt Expansion

Hellboy: The Board Game – The Wild Hunt adds gameplay elements from the “The Wild Hunt” storyline in the Hellboy comic series to Hellboy: The Board Game.

The Menace Among Us

The Menace Among Us is a semi-cooperative game of intrigue and survival in deep space. Adrift and powerless, your crippled vessel is bleeding oxygen. As you effect repairs, every breath you take brings you one step closer to death. You must work together to restore power before the air runs out — but hidden among you, as loyal friends and crew members, are imposters who have infiltrated security and continue to sabotage the ship. Their only goal is to avoid detection and kill the crew, by force or by asphyxiation. Can you identify them in time and eliminate the threat? Or will succumb to the menace among us?

The Menace Among Us is a 40 to 60-minute, asymmetrical card game for 4-8 players. Each player chooses an Agenda at random, either a loyal Crew member, a deadly Menace or the Coward, who’ll take any side just to survive. Your Agenda card sets a Team Goal and an Individual Goal, as well as outlines any special abilities and the card composition of your individual 13-card deck. Then, knowing your Agenda and Goals, you choose a Character who you believe will best help you achieve them or mask your true identity. Characters add 7 new cards to your deck, shuffle-building a unique combination of cards, as well as provide you two specialized Above Deck Actions.

In this hidden traitor game, how you play your cards and abilities is far more important than the meta game aspects of accusations and denials. Cards are played face down and shuffled together as “Below Deck Actions.” Here, Menace players secretly sabotage the ship’s systems and attack crew members, who are trying to save the ship with their cards. If too few crew members risk going below deck to effect repairs, the ship’s Emergency Maintenance Assistant (EmMA) adds cards to the pile to help. However, the system has also been compromised and occasionally places damaging cards into the mix, providing plausible deniability to the Menace players. In contrast, Above Deck Actions are conducted in full view of the crew. Most of these abilities have costs, either in Energy or Oxygen, both resources the crew is trying to increase. So, while The Doctor has the ability to heal a crew member and remove a debilitating effect, a Menace player, who may be secretly in control of The Doctor, cares far more that it costs 2 Oxygen to perform the healing.

At some point, someone’s behavior will raise suspicion. But, did they do so because they are trying to fulfill an Individual Goal – or are they a Menace? You can call a vote to expose their true nature. But if they are a loyal Crew member, you’ve just blown precious Oxygen in the effort to detain them. For that matter, was it a Menace player calling the vote in hopes of wasting the air on purpose?

If the Crew can find and eliminate the Menace players – and raise the Energy to a safe threshold before the air runs out, they win. If the Menace can prevent this or kill the crew outright, their mission succeeds. Special commendations are awarded for surviving and for achieving your Individual Goal.

The Quacks of Quedlinburg: The Herb Witches Expansion

The Quacks of Quedlinburg: The Herb Witches allows up to five players to compete at the same time, with this expansion also including more ingredient books, a new “fool’s herb”, and the introduction of herbal witches to add more variety.

Tales from the Loop RPG: Out of Time Adventure

There are rumors of a mechanical contraption that roams around the fields outside the small communities of the Mälaren Islands. At the same time, flyers asking for information on lost pets are increasing on the bulletin board outside the grocery store. On TV, the weatherman speaks of “random storm gusts” – and hasn’t there been severely bad weather the past few nights? This is the beginning of a series of mysteries that lead the children out into the wilderness of The Loop and down into its secret tunnels. But what does this all have to do with the long-awaited summer camp, the magnetrine ship Susi Talvi, and the 1969 moon landing? This is a 124-page full-color hardback module to the multiple award-winning Tales from the Loop roleplaying game.

Unmatched: Robin Hood vs Bigfoot Expansion

In battle, there are no equals.

Unmatched is a highly asymmetrical miniature fighting game for two or four players. (Note that this set is solely for two players, but it can be combined with other sets, which all serve up to four players.) Each hero is represented by a unique deck designed to evoke their style and legend. Tactical movement and no-luck combat resolution create a unique play experience that rewards expertise, but just when you’ve mastered one set, new heroes arrive to provide all new match-ups.

Robin Hood vs. Bigfoot features the titular heroes. Robin Hood and his outlaws excel at ranged attacks and robbing from their opponents. Bigfoot and his pal, the Jackalope, crash through the forest for quick attacks before disappearing like a figment of the mind.

Combat is resolved quickly by comparing attack and defense cards. However, each card’s unique effects and a simple but deep timing system lead to interesting decisions each time. The game also features an updated version of the line-of-sight system from Tannhauser for ranged attacks and area effects.

The game includes a double-sided board with two different battlefields, pre-washed miniatures for each hero, and custom life trackers that’s brought to life with the stunning artwork of Oliver Barrett and the combined design teams of Restoration Games and Mondo Games.

Welkin

You are dreaming about evading in the islands? To travel above the sky and further than the horizon? Be glad as you now are a celestial construction manager, architect of the sky! Collect animal and plant ressources, assemble them and add a little life spirit: congratulations! You just built an island in the sky!

The aim of the game is to win the most gold by crafting and selling those famous floating islands. Each turn, the players/architects can either select a new island creation contract, produce resources amongst the 5 existing types, or allocate these resources on their contracts to craft them. Players have limited spaces to store these contracts and resources, so they’ll have to juggle with their production line to complete their objectives in an optimized manner!

As soon as a contract is fulfilled, it is immediately sold and its creator receives gold depending on the resources used for its creation… but their value isn’t fixed and depends on the current market! Is it better to get one’s rewards immediately, or to manipulate the resources’ values for a greater reward later…?

Once there’s no more contracts available, the game ends. The architect who amassed the most gold will get their place amongst the stars!

Cartographers (A Roll Player Tale)

Queen Gimnax has ordered the reclamation of the northern lands. As a cartographer in her service, you are sent to map this territory, claiming it for the Kingdom of Nalos. Through official edicts, the queen announces which lands she prizes most, and you will increase your reputation by meeting her demands. But you are not alone in this wilderness. The Dragul contest your claims with their outposts, so you must draw your lines carefully to reduce their influence. Reclaim the greatest share of the queen’s desired lands and you will be declared the greatest cartographer in the kingdom.

In Cartographers, players compete to earn the most reputation stars by the time four seasons have passed. Each season, players draw on their map sheets and earn reputation by carrying out the queen’s edicts before the season is over. The player with the most reputation stars at the end of winter wins!

Thieves Den

In Thieves Den, set in the world of 10 Minute Heist: The Wizard’s Tower, the players are master thieves who send their hirelings out into the city to nab the choicest treasures, then sell those ill-gotten gains to the underworld fences to increase the master thief’s reputation. Certain treasures can also be bartered to Alazar, the wizard, for special powers.

Thieves Den is played over three rounds. In each round, each player drafts three location cards as potential targets for their thieving. All of these locations are public knowledge, and in the next phase the players take turns sending their minions to the locations to score the loot. You can send your thieves to any of the locations, but if you send them to another player’s location, that player may also get a prize, sometimes extra treasure, sometimes more thieves. During this phase, players can also send thieves to carry special assortments of treasures to one of the fences, gaining that player reputation points. Bonus reputation points can also be earned by building relationships with specific fences.

After three rounds, the player with the highest reputation is the new crime lord of the town.

Mental Blocks

Ready, set, Puzzle!

Mental Blocks is the frenetic, nail biting 3D puzzle game you will never want to put up.  Players must work together to solve 3d puzzles varying from entry level to hardcore head-scratchers before time runs out!  Each player has their own secret perspective to the puzzle, but there’s a catch!

Every person has a restriction: some players can only touch certain blocks, some can only touch certain shapes, some cannot speak.  This leads to delectable disarray as player scurry to solve each puzzle in real-time to graduate to the next puzzle – each ramping in difficulty as you proceed.

Mental Blocks features two different modes (Family or Challenge) to fit everyone’s tastes!

Conspiracy: The Solomon Gambit

The briefcase is out in the open, and six freelance agents are in the field.

In Conspiracy: The Solomon Gambit, a restoration of the 1973 classic game conspiracy, players vie for control of the agents by secretly paying them off and using them to move the briefcase across Europe, trying to get it to their HQ. But other players can challenge and stop an agent from moving if they have paid more than you — and for the right price they can even assassinate another agent.

In addition to a slick new look, this restored edition offers two new twists on the original gameplay. First, each agent has a unique ability that lets them move an agent or the briefcase for free. Second, an alternate win condition eliminates stalling and potential stalemates. If no one wins within a certain number of turns, Dr. Solomon can end the game immediately, and whoever has paid off the most to him wins the game. However, if you pay off too much to Dr. Solomon early in the game, that can leave you with little control over the other agents, forcing you to strike a tricky balance between immediate and long-term goals.

Team 3 (Green & Pink)

Three monkeys have started a construction company, and the building blueprints are coming in quick! Now the monkeys have to work together to complete their blueprints before time runs out.

The game of TEAM3 is played in teams of three players, with each player taking on the role of one of the three monkeys: the monkey who can’t speak, the monkey who can’t see, or the monkey in the middle.

  • The monkey who can’t speak is the only one who can see the the blueprint card with the outline of the structure that their team must build, but they are not allowed to talk. They can communicate only in gestures.
  • The monkey in the middle must interpret the gestures of the monkey who can’t speak and relay them to the monkey who can’t see so that they can build the structure.
  • The monkey who can’t see is the only one who can touch the pieces, but they must play the game with their eyes closed. They are responsible for building the structure, based on the directions given to them by the monkey in the middle.

Each version of TEAM3 comes with a different set of blueprints and a mini expansion.

September 2019 Previews: Carman’s Picks

Far Sector #1 (of 12)

SEP190441

November 13, 2019

Publisher: DC Comics

(W) N.K. Jemisin (A/CA) Jamal Campbell

N.K. Jemisin, the acclaimed, award-winning author of The Broken Earth and Inheritance science fiction trilogies, makes her comic book debut with bestselling Naomi artist Jamal Campbell as they thrust you into a stunning sci-fi murder mystery on the other side of the universe!
For the past six months, newly chosen Green Lantern Sojourner “Jo” Mullein has been protecting the City Enduring, a massive metropolis of 20 billion people. The city has maintained peace for over 500 years by stripping its citizens of their ability to feel. As a result, violent crime is virtually unheard of, and murder is nonexistent.
But that’s all about to change in this new maxiseries that gives a DC Young Animal spin to the legacy of the Green Lanterns!

I’ve really enjoyed the books that have come out of DC’s Young Animal imprint so it’s not a huge surprise to say I’m looking forward to this one. THAT SAID, I’m really looking forward to it. Look at that cover! It’s rad! I’m also loving the premise here and I’ve got a feeling that Far Sector may end up being my favorite Young Animal title yet.

The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage #1 (of 4)

SEP190466

November 20, 2019

Publisher: DC Comics

(W) Jeff Lemire (A) Bill Sienkiewicz (A/CA) Dennis Cowan

But what happens when he is drawn into a conspiracy that reaches from the heights of Hub City power to the depths of its underground tunnels? What happens when things stop being black-and-white and start getting a little gray? And what happens when, in a secret chamber deep beneath the city, Vic Sage meets his own end…and his new beginning? Eisner-winning writer Jeff Lemire joins forces with the legendary art team of Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz to resurrect Vic Sage, only to destroy him all over again…and again…

Oh yes. Jeff Lemire on a Question miniseries with Sienkiewicz and Cowan. Do not miss this one.

Family Tree #1

SEP190021

November 13, 2019

Publisher: Image Comics

(W) Jeff Lemire (A/CA) Phil Hester, Ryan Cody, Eric Gapstur

SERIES PREMIERE! When an eight-year-old girl literally begins to transform into a tree, her single mom, troubled brother, and possibly insane grandfather embark on a bizarre and heart-wrenching odyssey across the back roads of America in a desperate search for a way to cure her horrifying transformation before it’s too late.
But the farther they get from home, the more forces threaten to tear the family apart as fanatical cults, mercenaries, and tabloid Paparazzi close in, determined to destroy the girl-or use her for their own ends.
A new genre-defying series written by New York Times bestselling author JEFF LEMIRE (GIDEON FALLS, ASCENDER) and illustrated by acclaimed artist PHIL HESTER (Shipwreck, Green Arrow), FAMILY TREE combines mystery, action, and horror into an epic story about the lengths a mother will go to in order to keep her children safe.

Speaking of Jeff Lemire, how many books is that guy working on, anyway? I know I’ve said it before in this column but I’ll always try a book Lemire is collaborating on. Sad stories about families seem to be his bread and butter so I bet Family Tree will be great… and sad.

Undiscovered Country #1

SEP190027

November 6, 2019

Publisher: Image Comics

(W) Charles Soule, Scott Snyder (A) Daniele Orlandini (A/CA) Giuseppe Camuncoli

SERIES PREMIERE! This November, New York Times bestselling writers SCOTT SNYDER (WYTCHES, A.D.: AFTER DEATH) and CHARLES SOULE (CURSE WORDS, the forthcoming novel Anyone) will team up with artists GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI (The Amazing Spider-Man, Darth Vader, Hellblazer) and DANIELE ORLANDINI (Darth Vader) and 2019 Eisner Award-winning colorist MATT WILSON (THE WICKED AND THE DIVINE, PAPER GIRLS) to embark on an epic adventure in the brand-new ongoing series, UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY!
In this special oversized first issue, readers will journey into the near future, and an unknown nation that was once the United States of America-a land that’s become shrouded in mystery after walling itself off from the rest of the world without explanation over thirty years ago. When a team seeking a cure for a global pandemic breaches U.S. borders, they quickly find themselves in a struggle to survive this strange and deadly lost continent!

Undiscovered Country has an intriguing premise and a great creative team to boot. I’ll bite so I can see what this is all about. Maybe a supernatural dreamscape like the Southern Reach trilogy’s Area X? Or perhaps a clandestine dystopia similar to Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale

New Mutants #1

SEP190749

November 6, 2019

Publisher: Marvel Comics

(W) Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brisson (A/CA) Rod Reis

THE NEW GENERATION CLAIMS THE DAWN!
The classic New Mutants (Sunspot, Wolfsbane, Mirage, Karma, Magik, and Cypher) get together with a few new friends (Chamber, Mondo) to seek out their missing member and share the good news… a mission that takes them into space alongside the Starjammers!
Rated T+

I’ve loved Rod Reis’s art since picking up the first issue of C.O.W.L. back when that came out. I can’t wait to see what he does with New Mutants. Also, very cool to see Ed Brisson writing with Hickman on a new X title!
